OUR 2021 APPEAL : CONSTRUCTION OF A 21ST CENTURY SCIENCE LAB
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are 21st century skills that will help elevate pastoralist society towards greater self-reliance. At Emanyata, we believe this learning opportunity should equally be as available to girls as to boys, whatever their financial means. To facilitate this, Pastoral Women’s Council and its supporters have committed to construct a 21st-century science laboratory that meets the specification and quality requirements of the department of education for Tanzania.
Having started the build, and despite the added community hardships brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, with businesses and employment in tourism and cross-border trade collapsing, the community remains committed to its completion. On July 17th a Harambee (community fundraiser) will be held supported by local, national and international dignitaries. Hundreds of pastoralists will come together to celebrate the achievements of Emanyata Secondary School and to invest in it and the next generation of Maasai girls and boys education.
Your donation towards this project will go a long way toward demonstrating solidarity with our community and your commitment for equity in education.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Education can change everything. Sponsoring a girl is life changing. We know, because at Emanyata we see the results.
The disempowerment and marginalisation of Maasai women manifests itself through lack of access to education. Uneducated girls become illiterate parents, often unable to support their families, or access the services hat are available to them. At Emanyata we believe in the value of educating girls. Providing an education for a girl is her basic human right. It is also a catalyst for change. Through education, Maasai women are breaking negative cycles of disenfranchisement within their communities.
Emanyata is unique in many ways. Not only is it a community owned (non-government) school with the primary aim of educating pastoralist children, but almost half of it's students are girls, many from the most remote parts of our community where opportunities for girls to access education remain very limited.
With the support of Pastoral Women's Council advocacy campaigns and donor support, attitudes towards educating Maasai girls are changing. However, some parents are still unable or unwilling to pay school fees. There is a complex relationship between education and pastoralism.
Significant reasons for difficulties recruiting girls to secondary school include:
As advocates for education, equity and human rights, your message of solidarity with these young women through sponsorship is so powerful. An annual scholarship for a girl to attend Emanyata is $600* per year. With a four year commitment of $2,400* she can focus entirely on her personal development and academic performance all the way to graduation.
Your investment will leverage the enthusiasm and achievements of these girls in extraordinary ways.
To help us bring a deserving pastoralist girl to Emanyata Secondary School so she can lead a self-determined future, please contact Pastoral Women's Council at [email protected]
*suggested school fee includes estimated bank transfer charges within Tanzania.

Significant reasons for difficulties recruiting girls to secondary school include:
- Loss of communal land for grazing cattle due to pressures to commercialize for other purposes such as tourism and hunting.
- Parents often have limited income sources, reliant primarily on their cattle for income.
- Climate change is reducing their sustainability, resilience and food security, so affording an education for their children (particularly their daughters) is considered out of reach.
- Traditional pressures are placed on families from this highly patriarchal society. Boys education is often prioritized over that of girls, with some girls being prepared for marriage from a very early age, rather than being allowed to attend school.

Your investment will leverage the enthusiasm and achievements of these girls in extraordinary ways.
- Educated women are more empowered, less financially dependent on husbands, manage their family budgets, manage their child bearing and have healthier families.
- Women who engage in income generating activities prioritize education for their own children.
- Female graduates more frequently return to their communities to use their knowledge and skills gained through education.
